70 years to the Day - Plaque No. 1

On 27 Sept 1952 , 70 years ago Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, the widow of King George VI, accompanied by the widows of Commandos killed in WW2 , unveiled our iconic Commando memorial at Spean Bridge. The memorial was sculpted by artist Scott Sutherland.

70 years to the day members of the Commando Association, Royal Marine Association and RMA riders Scotland paid tribute, holding a short service at the “3 men on the Hill”, followed by the unveiling of the first Scott Sutherland Commando Heritage trail plaque (sponsored by the CA), close to the Commando memorial gardens.

A talk on the history of our memorial and the Commando Memorial Heritage trail was given by Ed Wilson Chairman of RMA Highlands and CA member.

Dave Matthews the CA’s Scottish rep raised a Port toast to absent friends, a further toast was given to “The King”.

Additional plaques will be laid in Wick (place of birth), Dundee x 3 (Studios , residence), Tayport (residence), the final plaque will be laid in the grounds of Achnacarry in memory of the 40 plus WW2 Commando’s recruits, who died in training (20 in Achnacarry) . United We Conquer
