A Fishy Tail

Writer's picture: Steve NicollSteve Nicoll

Powderhall Bronze hosted the Scott Sutherland Project committee with sculptor Alan Beattie Herriot on Tuesday the 18th of February. The four fish looked magnificent and a credit to the talents of Alan and the professional skills of Powderhall staff. Also joining in was cameraman Fian who recorded footage for South Uist Films.

The statue requires some final cosmetic touches before the brown/green patina is applied filled by a protective wax finish. Collection of the completed piece is scheduled for mid March. For any anglers out there, the all up weight was an impressive 105kg. The statue will be secured to the stone plinth by four corner pins. Groundwork at Achnacarry is scheduled to begin in late April or early May.

Later that day the two host stones for the inscriptions were delivered to bespoke letter carver David Wilson. David will hand carve the inscriptions 'UNITED WE CONQUER' and 'WE WILL REMEMBER THEM' with the all important dots between each word. The completed stones will be incorporated into the stone plinth of the Leaping Salmon statue. David will use Scotch Roman lettering, just like the inscription on Gor Commando Memorial. Thanks to David for his commitment to the project. His enthusiasm and desire to be involved was inspiring.

The letters and characters (dots) are available for 'adoption' at £50 each. 23 of the 38 available have been snapped up in just over a week. If you want to be part of this story and adopt a letter please contact me on: steveknicoll@gmail.com

Finally; repeated thanks and gratitude to the many supporters who have provided such a powerful bow wave of goodwill to steer this important project forward.
